Harvey Weinstein

One half of the infamous behemoth brother producing team, Harvey Weinstein was born on this day in 1952. While at the State University of New York at Buffalo, the Flushing, Queens native produced concerts with his brother, Bob. It was with the profits from this venture that the boys began Miramax Studios in 1979. Through persistence and bravado, the company went on to become one of the earliest driving forces behind the independent film movement.

Now that Harvey Weinstein has left Miramax, the distribution company he founded in 1979 and sold to Disney in 1993, he has truly grandiose plans for his new vehicle, the Weinstein Company. Together with his brother Bob, he plans to build a giant "multimedia company, just like we have always wanted." This summer, he formulated a business plan that stipulates a capital investment of three-quarters of a billion dollars, which would make the Weinstein Company one of the richest independent movie companies in America. So far, according to an SEC filing on Oct. 5, Weinstein has raised $230.5 million in equity. While rounding up the rest, he can borrow up to $150 million in bridge loans from a Goldman Sachs affiliate.

Movie macher Harvey Weinstein doesn’t do anything small, especially when it comes to his nuptials. Case in point: his wedding last weekend to fashion designer Georgina Chapman. After guests parked at a school near Mr. Weinstein’s waterfront Westport manse, they were shuttled to the home, where they found the Miramax mogul nattily clad in a Tom Ford tux—no doubt the result of a loving nudge from his new fashion-friendly wife, who reportedly looked stunning in a pleated, ivory tulle dress of her own design. While rocking out to the Gypsy Kings, partygoers noshed on eats catered by Nobu and Cipriani, who provided the Dover sole and veal osso buco. To cap off the festivities, fireworks were sent up over Long Island Sound. Accompanying the groom’s stylish duds were some big players from the fashion world: Anna Wintour, Glenda Bailey, Natalia Vodianova, Margherita Missoni, Helena Christensen, Jacquetta Wheeler, Carol Hamilton, Rachel Zoe and Karolina Kurkova.

Just after Christmas, while vacationing with his family on St. Bart's, Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein got a 104-degree fever he couldn't shake. He returned early to New York City for treatment and spent five weeks in the hospital. Rumors raced through Hollywood that he was close to death. Miramax was already having an off year at the box office--the word was that Weinstein's obsession with the struggling Talk magazine had been distracting him--and many predicted even more troubled days to come. But then Weinstein and his co-chairman and brother, Bob, pulled a couple of coups. "Scream 3" made a gigantic $34.7 million on its opening weekend, and--far more surprising--their largely ignored movie "The Cider House Rules" snagged seven Oscar nominations.

Normally, the entrance of Harvey Weinstein to an awards event around this time of year is preceded by the music that plays in “Jaws” just before the shark chomps into somebody. But not this year – Harvey has a limited number of contenders and is too busy building a new company to add to the dynamism and expense of the awards season. With the pressure off, and the star of his “Transamerica” getting best actress from the NBR, Harvey was serene – no smoking, level blood sugar, filling the room with love. The Bagger bumped into his old friend Harvey just before the event began – actually, the Bagger once wrote a story about Harvey and has regrettably been in a screaming match with Harvey since, but then who hasn’t, right? But détente was in the air and Harvey was in a very gracious way. He offered an infomercial on behalf of the NBR – “It’s a fantastic night, in part because the Board of Review champions films that otherwise might not get noticed“ – and said he did not miss being in the scrum – “I am very much enjoying my new role.” He moved over to offer big ups to George Clooney and his agent Bryan Lourd at table 20, a fulcrum of buzz on a night when “Good Night, and Good Luck” won best picture and Clooney buddy Steven Gaghan won best adapted screenplay.
