Harvard University, which in 1986 commemorated its 350th anniversary, is the oldest higher educational establishment in the US. Built 16 years after the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth, Harvard University has developed from nine students who had a single teacher to a great enrollment of over 18,000 degree candidates, plus students and undergraduates in 10 chief academic units. Besides, additional 13,000 learners are enrolled in Harvard Extension School courses. More than 14,000 staff works at Harvard, plus over 2,000 faculty.
Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Chair of the Department of African and African American Studies at Harvard University, is the Editor in Chief for this project. Dr. Gates ... wrote and hosted the recent PBS series "African American Lives," in which genealogy, oral history, family stories, and DNA analysis were used to trace lineage through American history and back to Africa. Dr. Gates is very enthusiastic about this project: "The Oxford African American Studies Center will provide students, scholars, and researchers with online access to a landmark resource in African American studies."

Image Collage Harvard University has received the approval from the Board of Directors of the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) for plans for the Harvard Allston Science Complex. The four building complex, to be located on Western Avenue in Allston, is slated to become the new home of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and other emerging interdisciplinary scientific initiatives at Harvard. The announcement follows an extensive review process with the Harvard Allston Task Force, the Allston community and the City of Boston, and marks an important milestone in Harvard's ongoing effort to create an extended campus in Allston.
Lawrence H. Summers, who resigned in February as president of Harvard University, is joining D.E. Shaw, one of the nation’s largest hedge funds, as a managing director. Dr. Summers, an economist who served as Treasury Secretary under President Clinton, will be involved part-time in “various strategic initiatives and high-level portfolio management activities,” the firm said in a statement. D.E. Shaw, based in New York, had $20 billion in assets under management at the end of last year.
Nikon has opened Imaging Centers at Harvard University, at the Universityof Heidelberg in Germany , and Hokkaido University in Japan .
