Before joining the Harvard faculty, he spent 18 years teaching at the University of Pennsylvania (1946-64), and held the Harry Austryn Wolfson Professorship at Brandeis University (1964-67). In 1968 he was the Merriweather Distinguished Visiting Professor at C.W. Post for Cognitive Studies. Lawrence H. Summers, who resigned in February as president of Harvard University, is joining D.E. Shaw, one of the nation’s largest hedge funds, as a managing director. Dr. Summers, an economist who served as Treasury Secretary under President Clinton, will be involved part-time in “various strategic initiatives and high-level portfolio management activities,” the firm said in a statement. D.E. Shaw, based in New York, had $20 billion in assets under management at the end of last year.

Harvard has several athletic facilities, such as the Lavietes Pavilion, a multi-purpose arena and home to the Harvard basketball teams. The Malkin Athletic Center, known as the "MAC," serves both as the university's primary recreation facility and as a satellite location for several varsity sports. The five story building includes two cardio rooms, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a smaller pool for aquaerobics and other activities, a mezzanine, where all types of classes are held at all hours of the day, and an indoor cycling studio, three weight rooms, and a three-court gym floor to play basketball. The MAC ... offers personal trainers and specialty classes. The MAC is also home to Harvard volleyball, fencing, and wrestling. The offices of several of the school's varsity coaches are also in the MAC.

Susan C. Athey, a Harvard University economics professor, has joined an impressive list of economists by winning the prestigious John Bates Clark Medal for 2007. Because Athey is the first woman to win the award since its creation in 1947, her accomplishment is particularly noteworthy.
