To many golfers the world over Jersey's famous son Harry Vardon is considered one of the key figures in the history of golf. With a record of six Open victories, attained over thirty years. A record that has never been beaten, Harry Vardon was the first British golfer ever to win the United States Open.

In 2006, Harry Vardon is in a slump. The Vardon Trophy is now so unimportant that Woods can't be bothered to play even one more round of golf than he has to. except that he will finish with 59 rounds of golf, one short of the minimum required to win. Woods is skipping this week's tour stop at Disney World, minutes away from his house, for only the second time in his career and is expected to take a Pasadena on next week's tournament in Tampa, where he has never played. If he entered either event, played one round and shot just about anything, he'd score another Vardon. Instead, he'll apparently cede the award to Jim Furyk.

Harry Vardon learned to play the links as a caddie in Grouville on Jersey, one of Britain?s Channel Islands. After moving to the British mainland in 1890, he won his first Open title at Muirfield in 1896. The British Open victories followed like dominoes in 1898, 1899, 1903, 1911 and 1914. Vardon even made an impression on America, winning the U.S. Open in 1900. In tribute to his talents, the trophies for low scoring average on the PGA and European Tours were named in Vardon?s memory.

Harry Vardon was born in 1870 in Grouville, Jersey. In early years school holidays were spent caddying at the local course and he himself soon became adept at the game. On leaving school Harry followed his father to work as a gardener. However, it was not long before one of his brothers, Tom, already a successful golf professional, suggested he moved to England. In 1890 he was appointed professional / greenkeeper at Studley Royal, Ripon, North Yorkshire, moved to Bury, Lancashire for a short time and was appointed to Ganton in 1896.

Harry Vardon was born in Grouville, Jersey, Channel Islands. As a child growing up on the island of Jersey, Harry Vardon did not play much golf. Inspired by his older brother, Tom, he eventually took up the game in his teens and by age 20 he was so good that he turned professional. Vardon was the first professional golfer to play in knickers -- the "proper" Englishman dressed in an uncomfortable shirt and tie with a buttoned jacket. Nonetheless, within a few years he became golf's first superstar.
