Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is the boy-wizard star of author J.K. Rowling's series of children's books by the same name. The character is orphaned as an infant when an evil nemesis murdered his wizard parents. Harry survives, living with his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys, unaware of the legend surrounding his childhood. A mysterious invitation arrives on his 11th birthday, inviting him to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The movie follows Harry during his first year at the school, where he discovers the world of magic.

Harry Potter isn't the only must-read for students these days. While all four Harry Potter books are in the New York Times top ten children's chapter books list, another four of the top ten books are from the Series of Unfortunate Events series by Lemony Snicket. Dark and smartly funny, these books chronicle the unlucky lives of the three Baudelaire children, orphaned from the opening pages of The Bad Beginning, the first book in the series. There's danger and gloom on every page of these mock Gothics. But it's hard not to recommend books with face-snapping crabs and names like Carmelita Spats and the Prufrock Preperatory School.

The wildly popular Harry Potter book series by J. K. Rowling has caused controversy for many families over the past five years. These novels according to some critics are harmless, adventurous, children's tales. Others choose to portray them as stories that inspire children to become involved in the occult and serious witchcraft. The Harry Potter novels chronicle the life of a young wizard whose wizard parents were killed by the evil Lord Voldermort. On his eleventh birthday he receives invitation to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Each of the five books represents a year of his life there (Walker).

The evil in the Harry Potter series is breathtaking. These books are not a "C.S. Lewis" ideal of good versus evil with a lasting message that there is ultimately an eternal power of righteousness. The only power in this series is power itself. Listen to that quote again from Kjos' description of Hogwart's theology. "There is no good and evil, there is only power..." The latest book in the Harry Potter series and the "Goblet of Fire" makes Lord Voldemort the main character of the first chapter.

The author of Harry Potter and the Bible takes the time in the first four chapters to give the reader a brief summary of all four of the Harry Potter books that have been published to date. J.K. Rowling intends to write seven books in this series. The author quotes Rowling as saying that she believes the number seven "is a magical number, a mystical number." Warner Bros. has a picture deal with Rowling to make all seven books into movies, the first one to be released late 2001, with the others following at the rate of one a year.
