After directing the $318 million-grossing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Columbus received thousands of letters thanking him for staying true to J.K. Rowling's magical best-seller. Critics... complained that the film held few surprises. "We got a lot of heat for being so faithful," Columbus says. "But you can't do it any better than it's written on the page." Potter-heads should be equally pleased by his sequel.

How to read"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"? Why, very quickly, to begin with, perhaps ... to make an end. Why read it? Presumably, if you cannot be persuaded to read anything better, Rowling will have to do. is there any redeeming education use to Rowling? Is there any to Stephen King?

As the story develops, Harry and his friends research Flamel in the library. They discover that he was the only known maker of the Sorcerer's Stone. The Elixir of Life, which gives immortality, is associated with the Stone. Flamel, now 665 years old, appears to have gained immortality, but only as long as the Stone exists. When Dumbledore destroys the Stone, Hamel and his wife Perenelle die.

For all but the most nitpicking Potterphiles out there, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is nothing less than the perfect visual incarnation of J.K. Rowling's world of swooping owls and flying broomsticks. However, it's never precisely more than that, either; the very act of giving image and voice to these rich literary precepts places them in a realm inevitably less magical than the imagination.
