The Dursleys leave, but Harry can't find the platform. Suddely he hears a woman talking about "muggles" with 4 boys and a girl. The girl's name is Ginny. The boys' names are Percy, Fred, George and Ron. She explains to Harry that he should 'walk right through the wall'.

Die Harry-Potter-Romane wurden in einigen Sprachen ungekürzt als Hörbuch veröffentlicht. Die englischen Hörbücher wurden von dem britischen Schauspieler Stephen Fry, die speziell für den US-amerikanischen Markt produzierten Fassungen von Jim Dale, die deutschen Hörbücher von Rufus Beck gelesen. Letztere sind beim Hörverlag erschienen. Die Bände eins bis vier wurden mit der Platin-Schallplatte für 300.000 verkaufte Exemplare ausgezeichnet. Diese Auszeichnung erreichte bislang noch kein anderes deutsches Hörbuch. Die Harry-Potter-Hörbücher waren die ersten, die auch als MP3-Version erhältlich waren.

Harry is adopted and for the next ten years in his aunts and uncles home (the Dursleys) in London. But it is a miserable muggle life ("muggles" are mundane, non-magical humans) as he is constantly tormented by his cruel guardians and a spoiled bully of a cousin, his bedroom is a closet under the stairs. In the mundane human world Harry is a nobody, But everything changes on his eleventh birthday. He discovers that he is a wizard of great renown. Harry's discovery of his mysterious powers reminds him that he's altogether different from others.

Die Autorin hat für die Harry-Potter-Romane eine Erzählperspektive gewählt, die als personale Erzählsituation bezeichnet wird. Da es sich bei der Hauptfigur um einen heranwachsenden Teenager handelt, der die eigene Zauberwelt erst allmählich kennenlernt, kann auch der Leser langsam in diese Welt einsteigen.

Vernon tried to destroy the letters in a futile attempt to keep Harry from his destiny. As the letters kept coming in increasingly larger quantities, the Dursleys saw no alternative but to flee from them. The owls carrying the letters followed them wherever they went. In a final desperate move, the Dursleys relocated themselves to a shack on a rocky island in the middle of a body of water.
