Harry Houdini: Wifes
built 662 days ago
What really happened was that Houdini, while on tour in Montreal, Canada, was relaxing backstage where some college students came to see him. Houdini often challenged people to punch him in the stomach with all their strength, and he agreed to let one of the students take a swing. But the punch came while Houdini was lying on a couch, before he had prepared for the impact. An injury to the appendix resulted. Left untreated for several days, it turned into an infection that struck Houdini down during a performance in Detroit, Michigan. Rushed to a hospital, he held on for a few days before dying in his wife's arms on October 31, 1926—Halloween day.

On March 22, 2007, around 80 years after Houdini died, his grandnephew George Hardeen announced that the courts would be asked to allow exhumation of Houdini's body. The purpose was to look for evidence that Houdini was poisoned by Spiritualists, as suggested in The Secret Life of Houdini.[33] In a statement given to the Houdini Museum in Scranton, Jeff Blood opposed the application and suggested it was a publicity ploy for the book. Blood is Houdini's grandnephew on his wife's side.[34]

Houdini soon became known as the "King of Handcuffs" challenging audiences to produce any set of handcuffs and proving he could escape from them. Houdini's infamy at this stage was largely due to his widely publicised Challenge Act - a flagrant display of his incredible ability as an escapologist. In 1900, Houdini, accompanied by his brother Theodore Hardeen and his wife Wilhelmina, sought and achieved fame and fortune in Europe and returned years later an established performer.

Houdini became interested in spiritualism when his mother died and incorporated some spiritualist aspects to his act. However, he did believe in some kind of afterlife and gave a ten word code to his wife which would provide proof after his death. Although many mediums claimed to have been contacted by him none have been able to repeat the code.
