Harry Houdini: Bess Rahner
built 676 days ago
Three years after Houdini's death, a psychic announced that he had received the secret message. And he was correct. Except that it hadn't come from the spirit world. It turned out that a year earlier, Bess had accidentally leaked the message to some journalists. So much for that.

In 1894, Houdini fell in love with singer and dancer, Wilhelmina Beatrice Rahner (or "Bess," as she was known to friends and family.) After a two-week long courtship, 20-year old Houdini married Bess at Coney Island. Within a few months, she replaced Theo as a member of the magic act and the couple became known as "The Houdini's."

Each year since the magician's death in 1926, has seen the Official Houdini Seance originated from Houdini's efforts to expose fraudulent mediums. He claimed that if there were truly a way to contact the living after one's death, he would do so. He set up a code with his wife Bess, who faithfully attended the annual seances and awaited his return for 10 years, after which time she gave up.

Bess Houdini held yearly séances on Halloween for ten years after Houdini's death, but Houdini never appeared. In 1936, after a last unsuccessful séance on the roof of the Knickerbocker Hotel, she put out the candle that she had kept burning beside a photograph of Houdini since his death, later (1943) saying, "ten years is long enough to wait for any man." The tradition of holding a séance for Houdini continues by magicians throughout the world to this day and is currently organized by Sidney H. Radner [4] and others, including Dorothy Dietrich [5] at the Houdini Museum in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

In death, spiritualists and mediums tried to reach Houdini who had established a secret code with his wife Bess Houdini. (After all, if anyone could communicate after death, it would be Houdini.) Seances were held for years after his death and are still being held today.
