Harrison Ford: Ford Harrison

International Herald Tribune - Harrison Ford was next. Carrying a coffee cup, he walked to the edge of the stage to see where he would be sitting Sunday. A placard with his name and photo sat next to one bearing Calista Flockhart's.

Harrison Ford's father was a local advertising executive who sometimes worked as a radio actor, and his mother was a former radio actress who stayed home and tended the children. The family was of all-American mixed heritage, German, Irish, and Catholic on his father's side, Russian Jewish on his mother's side.

* Harrison Ford "proves why his bad temper is so well-known," says one writer. "When I mentioned the word 'charisma,' and asked him why he's so in demand to play heroes on screen, he cut me off, saying, 'If you want to talk about charisma, go find Ricky Martin.' I was speechless after that."

A particularly satisfying way to watch a Harrison Ford thriller is to imagine that all the characters he has ever played in thrillers are in fact the same person. So if you see Ford in "Firewall," as a security expert for a bank, imagine that this is the same man who had his private plane stolen ("Air Force One"), his wife murdered ("The Fugitive"), his family targeted by terrorists ("Patriot Games"), his president betray him ("Clear and Present Danger"), and his wife kidnapped in Paris ("Frantic").

Harrison Ford was sent as a replacement Director to CTU Coruscant by Division Command after Dakar Dolan's death. He was eventually succeeded by Burt Reynolds. Before stepping down, Ford gave a small bag to Reynolds as a "protection against things to come". The bag contained a small blaster pistol.

It was another major hit, with Ford Oscar-nominated for the first and only time. But he now needed a challenge and found one by sticking with Weir for The Mosquito Coast. Here he played eccentric inventor Allie Fox, who takes his wife (Helen Mirren) and son (River Phoenix) off in search of paradise in the Central American jungle. Conflicts, naturally, arise. It was a thoughtful film, with Harrison putting in his best non-action performance since The Conversation (being Golden Globe-nominated for his pains), but not a smash. It remains... one of Ford's personal favourites.
