Hanukkah: Hanukkah Song
built 679 days ago
There are several songs associated with the festival of Hanukkah. The most well known in English-speaking countries include "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel" and "Chanukah, Oh Chanukah." In Israel, Hanukkah has become something of a national holiday. A large number of songs have been written on Hanukkah themes, perhaps more so than for any other Jewish holiday. Some of the most well known are "Hanukkiah Li Yesh" ("I Have a Hanukkah Menora"), "Kad Katan" ("A Small Jug"), "S'vivon Sov Sov Sov" ("Hanukka Top, Spin and Spin"), "Mi Yimalel" (Who can Retell") and "Ner Li, Ner Li" ("I have a Candle").
This is a sort of reverse-Hanukkah alert, in that klezmer music is a Yiddish folk form yet almost all the songs on this album are standard Christmas carols in klezmer style. "Deck the Halls," "Jingle Bells," "We Three Kings," the title carol, "Little Drummer Boy," and so on. One novelty tune appears here, "Santa Gey Gesunderheit," the only vocal, in which a Jewish haberdasher marvels at a certain North Pole's resident's ability to execute his Christmas Eve route. A one-joke album, handicapped further by the fact that The Three Weissmen executed funnier versions of "Deck" and "Jingle" in the same vein on the album Blame It On Christmas.

Latkes (potato pancakes) fried in oil, jelly doughnuts and many other treats fried in oil are enjoyed during Hanukkah. Families sing various songs play games in the light of the Menorah. Children add to their fun with Dreidels-- a four sided "top" that they spin meaning "A great Miracle Happened There." Like many other Jewish Holidays, Hanukkah is a special time for families to be together and celebrate the festivities of joy and thanksgiving.
Some Jewish families will sing Hanukkah songs and fry some potato pancakes called "latkes," homemade donuts or other festive foods using hot oil -- a key symbol in the season. Many parents give their children small gifts each night, such as coins or chocolates wrapped in gold foil to resemble coins.
In Russia, Zionist nationalists retold the story of Hanukkah to emphasize the victories of the Maccabees, as military heroes who made Jewish history by taking up arms and taking Jewish history in their own hands. This version can be heard most explicitly in a Zionist song which secularized a Biblical hymn: "Mi yimalel -- Who can retell the heroic deeds of Israel?"
