Chinese is still prestigious, and like Japan, Hangul is still used side by side with Chinese characters in South Korea. On the other hand, North Korea has completely abandoned all Chinese characters and use exclusively Hangul.

Hangul is het schrift dat gebruikt wordt om Koreaans te schrijven. In tegenstelling tot het Chinese schrift, is Hangul fonetisch. Het bestaat uit 10 klinkers en 14 medeklinkers die als lettergrepen in een soort vierkantje worden gegroepeerd. Onder leiding van de Koreaanse koning Sejong de Grote (1397-1450) kwam het in 1443 of januari 1444 tot stand en het werd in 1446 voor het eerst gepubliceerd in de Hunmin Jeongeum.

It took until the liberation of Korea in 1945 for Hangul to be allowed to be freely used again. Today, about 80 million people use Hangul and it is ranked 12th in frequency of use worldwide.
