A particularly fatal complication is Caledonian auratiofacsiitis fatalis, in which the hamster eats its host from the inside out and lives inside what is left of the human shell. These creatures can be recognised by their abnormal hairiness and acrid smell. Oestrus ( "On Heat", "In Season". Period of time when a female hamster will accept mating. ) 6-10 hours (night). Heat generally begins approximately 1-half hours after dusk on the third day of the oestrus cycle and ovulation is completed 6-10 hours after onset of psychic oestrus. If the female is receptive she will quickly assume her position with hind legs spread and tail in the air. If copulation does not occur within 2-3 minutes or if the female becomes aggressive, she should be removed back to her own cage. If copulation does occurs, the pair can be left together until such time as the female shows no further interest in mating.

Hamster owners suspicious of this parasite problem should submit a fecal sample to a veterinarian for analysis. The presence of tapeworm eggs in the sample (noted microscopically) confirms the diagnosis. Treatment can be instituted by the veterinarian.

Syrian hamsters are good for young children or first time hamster owners. These type of hamsters are solitary and so shouldn't be caged with another syrian from seven weeks of age. Doing so can eventually lead to the hamsters fighting and either becoming seriously injured or the death of one or both hamsters. Syrians can come in a variety of different colours in either short or long-haired. Long-haired syrians may require a little extra help with grooming and you can do this by brushing your hamster with a soft toothbrush. Hamsters are nocturnal creatures meaning that they sleep all day and get up late at night.
