Hampton University, located on the shore of Chesapeake Bay in Hampton, Virginia, was founded in 1868 by Samuel Chapman Armstrong, the son of a prominent missionary family that settled in Hawaii in the early 1800s. Armstrong was enrolled at Williams College in Massachusetts when the Civil War began. He volunteered for the Union Army, rose quickly in rank and was given command of an African American military unit. By the end of the Civil War Armstrong had obtained the rank of Brevet General.

rp Hampton University - American Executive - RedCoat Publishing A historically African-American university, Hampton was founded in 1868 during the Reconstruction to educate newly-freed slaves. Over the past 138 years, it has blossomed into a world-class educational institution offering 38 bachelor’s degree programs, 14 master’s degree programs, and doctoral and professional degrees in nursing, physics, physical therapy, and pharmacy. It was recognized in 2004 by US News & World Report as one of the top southern universities and was ranked in the October 2004 issue of Black Enterprise as the third leading college for African-American students in the US.
In 1995, Hampton joined the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, commonly referred to as the MEAC. Since joining, Hampton has won dozens of MEAC titles in football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's track, and men's and women's tennis. In March 2001, the men's basketball team made NCAA Tournament history, becoming only the fourth 15th-seeded team to defeat a 2nd-seeded team. Hampton defeated Iowa State, 58-57 on March 15, but lost to Georgetown two days later. The win still makes SportsCenter's Top 10 NCAA tournament upsets.
Coach Bobby Collins doesn't much care that his Hampton University basketball team must win a play-in vs. Monmouth tonight to join the NCAA Tournament's main 64-team bracket. Others... are annoyed that a game matching what the NCAA selection committee deems as the tournament's two weakest entries includes the champion of a historically black conference for the fifth consecutive year.
