Hampton University is composed of six schools (business, engineering and technology, liberal arts and education, nursing, pharmacy, and science), as well as a graduate college and a college of continuing education. It offers more than 50 bachelor's degree programs, more than 20 master's degree programs, and doctoral or professional degrees in nursing, physics, physical therapy, and pharmacy. The school has an enrollment of more than 5,700 students. A historically black college, Hampton was founded in 1868 during Reconstruction to educate newly-freed people with the support of the Freedman's Bureau, Northern philanthropists, and religious groups.

HAMPTON, Va., February 22, 2007—For the second time in two years, Hampton University has inexplicably denied official recognition to students seeking to start a gay and lesbian group on campus. The group, Students Promoting Equality, Action and Knowledge (SPEAK), contacted the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), which is calling on Hampton to either explain or reverse its decision.
Hampton University offers a broad range of liberal arts, technical, pre-professional, professional, and graduate degree programs to more than 5,700 students from 49 states and 35 territories and nations. This constituent diversity creates the need for increased communication efficiency with potential recruits, current students, and active alumni. Hampton University held a hearing for December 2, 2005 to discipline seven students accused of violating campus rules by passing out "unauthorized" fliers and holding an "unauthorized" protest. Hampton is punishing the students with "community service," which means that peaceful protests and fliers are still banned on campus, and these students face even harsher penalties if they protest the administration or the government. Hampton's rules, and the arbitrary enforcement against progressive students, violate the principles of academic freedom and student rights which are essential at any college.

Hampton University is located in Hampton, Virginia, 27 miles north of Norfolk and 80 miles southeast of Richmond. The University was built on Virginia's peninsula, where the James and York rivers join. The region is richly steeped in early American history: a Kecoughtan native community once stood near the University grounds, and the historic communities of Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg are all within a 45-minute drive.
