Hampton University is a privately endowed, nonsectarian, coeducational institution. Its almost 6,100 students come from nearly every state and thirty-five other territories and nations. The campus is one of the most picturesque in the South. Its 285 acres of waterfront property accommodate 120 buildings that include academic buildings, staff residences, historic landmarks, and state-of-the-art facilities. Founded in 1868, the University looks back on more than a century of outstanding contributions in higher education; it now has the buildings, the equipment, the faculty, and the administrative leadership to meet the challenges of its second century.

Dover, Del. – The Lady Pirates of Hampton University (12-8, 6-2 MEAC) look to rebound from a tough loss against NC A&T today as they face the Lady Hornets of Delaware State (10-12, 5-3 MEAC). This is a key match up for the Lady Pirates as they look to revert back to their winning ways in the MEAC play.

Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute became simply Hampton Institute in 1930 and gained university status in 1984. Originally located in Elizabeth City County, it was long-located in the town of Phoebus, which was incorporated in 1900. Phoebus and Elizabeth City County were consolidated with the neighboring City of Hampton to form a much larger independent city in 1952. The City of Hampton uses the Emanicipation Oak on its official seal. From 1960 to 1970, noted diplomat and educator Jerome H. Holland was president of the Hampton Institute.

The combined Hampton Roads Healthy Marriage Coalition was supposed to raise $1 to get $2 of federal money. The state Division of Child Support Enforcement provided the first year's $125,000 match out of its research budget to give the group time to raise money for the remaining three years. Local legislators and organizations wrote letters of support - though none committed to help the group raise the remaining $375,000 that was required by the grant.

During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Union-held Fort Monroe in southeastern Virginia at the mouth of Hampton Roads became a gathering point and safe haven of sorts for fugitive slaves. These individuals were labeled "contraband of War by the commander, General Benjamin F. Butler, and thereby safe from return to slave owners. As large numbers of individuals sought status as contrabands, they built the Grand Contraband Camp nearby from materuials reclaimed from the ruins of Hampton, which had been burned by retreating Confederates.

Located on the southeastern tip of the Virginia peninsula on Chesapeake Bay, Hampton is the oldest continuously settled English community in the United States. As an Indian village called Kecoughtan, it had been visited by the first English colonists before they sailed up the James River to settle in Jamestown.
