LYCOS RETRIEVER
Halo Wars

Ye, Halo Wars has been in development for years. Its a Real Time Strategy (RTS) Game. The Single player campaign follows the story of the occupants of a UNSC Cruiser that gets involved in a battle against the Covenant over lost Forerunner Relics. The multiplayer allows players to play as the UNSC or the Covenant, its unknown about the Flood but as the story takes place before the first Halo game, its very unlikely. The game plays a lot like Command and Conquer games but there are some unique twists in the gameplay mechanics. With some luck it will stick to its release date and be out this year.

In his enthusiastic Halo Wars presentation, game developer Graeme Devine is more than willing to share information with the press. Though most of the knowledge gained by eager listeners was related to science-fiction shenanigans and enormous space hoops, the most important fact given is one that's never directly stated. Mr. Devine, like most of his comrades at Age of Empires developer, Ensemble Studios, is somewhat of a control freak.

The Halo Wars official FAQ states that the game will take place prior to the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. The game is set around 2531, in the UNSC's first battles with the Covenant around the planet Harvest. It will allow the player to control the crew and vehicles of a UNSC ship, CFV-88 Spirit of Fire, and receive instructions and commands from its AI Serena. An update posted on January 30, 2007 stated that the game would be using Motion capture. Screens on the website show this being used. However, after questioning, one of the moderators claimed that whether or not it will be used and how are still unknown.

Before starting on actual production of Halo Wars, Ensemble studios spent six month perfecting the controls. The problem: The controls of real-time strategy games don't translate well to a console controller. RTS games are complex in nature and there are just not enough buttons on the face of a controller to micro manage all of those actions. Ensemble... has found what they think is the most simplistic and best approach to playing Halo Wars on the Xbox 360. The entire game can actually be played through using only the left analog stick and the four face buttons, A, B, X, and Y. Although, more advanced controls available for the game's higher control functions such as waypoints and jump-to-units or buildings.

The Halo Wars trailer has been released on the public. It's pre-rendered, obviously, though the official site (... live!) claims it uses lots of in-game models. The game takes place before Halo 1, following the crew of the UNSC "Spirit of Fire" from initiaql skirmishes to an all out war against the covenant. I'll be interested in seeing how they handle Spartans — I believe within the Halo universe, there's only 16 who survived the bone-grafting process, so there's actually not a hell of a lot of them you can play around with and stay within the fiction of the universe. Obviously, though, they'll be a type of hero unit. More»

According to the game’s PR rep, Halo Wars is specifically aimed at console players who may have never tried playing an RTS (most RTS games are made for the PC). There will apparently be features in the game that should appeal to hardcore RTS types as well, but Devine couldn’t share anything about the multiplayer game (such as whether you can play Covenant vs. Humans, or even Covenant vs. Covenant) so its hard to say whether the veterans will pick it up.
