The Haile Selassie Fund for Ethiopia’s Children in Need is the main vehicle of the Ethiopian Crown Council to direct charitable donations and works from the United States. It is through the Fund, for example, that the Crown Scholarships are being dispersed to those Ethiopian students chosen to receive four-year scholarships to La Roche College in Pennsylvania, USA. These full scholarships include tuition, room and full board for the four years of the degree course.

In the 1950s Haile Selassie worked to absorb into Ethiopia the important Red Sea province of Eritrea (this was accomplished in 1962). Later he founded the University College of Addis Ababa, and welcomed home many Ethiopian college graduates from abroad. His Silver Jubilee (celebration of twenty-five years in power) in 1955 served as the occasion to present a revised constitution, followed in 1957 by the first general election. Haile Selassie's continued work to hold political balance between several major politicians as well as his efforts to shut out new politicians who still found few places in government, eventually led opposing elements to attempt a government coup (takeover) in December 1960. The coup failed, but it gave a short and violent message to the unchanging Ethiopian politics and hinted of future possibilities.

In May of 1936, Haile Selassie left the country for exile. That same month, Italy claimed Ethiopia as its possession. In his attempts to regain control, Haile made a forceful speech at the League of Nations in Geneva. On the 30 June 1936, Haile argued to the members that there were two choices -- "collective security or international lawlessness." As a result of his persuasiveness, the Soviet Union and the U.S.A. refused to recognize the Italian government's control of Ethiopia. However, Britain and France recognized Italy as having possession of Ethiopia. Although Haile did not immediately obtain his country back, he started receiving recognition as a major international player.

Haile Selassie modernisation of the whole country was based on a divide and rule policy. He worked against Tigray in many ways. He continued to isolate Tigray and it became one of the poorest and most underdeveloped regions in Ethiopia.
Haile Selassie requested help from Britain to help to put down the Tigrayan rebellion. The British Royal Air Force flew from Yemen and bombed the "Weyane" while they were meeting in Mekele, Capital City of Tigray. The British appeared to have forgotten that the Tigrayans were their allies against Tewodros in 1869 and the Mahdist of Sudan in 1889. The market in Mekele is now remembered as grave of the "First Weyane".
