Gyruss: Games
built 186 days ago
Making a strong effort to be noticed in the early 80s, Gyruss is a fine shooter, complete with a classic soundtrack and fun blasting mechanics. Designed by Yoshiki Okamoto who would produce countless classics for Capcom later in his career (including the Street Fighter franchise), his unique design stands the test of time. Sadly, this Xbox Live Arcade edition does not properly represent the game.

Gyruss is one of the most well-remembered fusion of music and video games of all time. The fantastic musical score that plays throughout - “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” by Johann Sebastian Bach, engulfs you like an ocean wave and doesn’t let you down off the surf board while it is rolling in. It’s quite a rush, and can put you deep into the gaming “zone”. Why didn’t all games have cool music like this? Soon after, most arcade hits did.

After working on the successful "Time Pilot", Gyruss' designer, Yoshiki Okamoto, went on to create "Gyruss", which, although a success in its own right, was released at a time when the arcade craze was starting to die down. This may explain why the game didn't shift the units it really deserved. After its release, Okamoto asked for a raise, or he would quit. He was duly fired when he turned up for work the following day.

Gyruss was ... slightly remade for the Famicom Disk System in Japan, and later the NES in North America, released by Konami's subsidiary Ultra Games. In these versions of the game, the gameplay is still largely the same, but there are several revisions. Despite the revisions, the game was still well received in North America. Revisions include:
Despite being so old, the pseudo-3D look of Gyruss is still pretty effective. Plus, the game has been dressed up with “enhanced” graphics that actually look decent – they don’t make this look like an entirely new game, just polish up the original aesthetic. Though some purists on staff hated the new look - especially the red nebula in the background, which makes it tougher to see enemy shots, asteroids, and the enemies themselves.

Gyruss is a repackaging of the 80’s arcade game that went by the same name. It includes the Microsoft-standardized enhanced graphics, online leaderboards/co-op play, and achievements. If you don’t recall playing Gyruss in the arcades as a young lad, it’s because you probably didn’t. Galaga was superior in every way. If you do remember playing Gyruss in the arcades, you had too many quarters and not enough good sense.
