Gyruss: Enemies
built 262 days ago
Gyruss is a shoot-em-up through the Earth's solar system where the player's ship moves in a circular orbit around the outer edge of the screen while shooting at enemies in the center. It's all very confusing, especially when your ship is upside down and moving the stick right makes your ship go left!

Gyruss is mostly a hybrid of Tempest and Galaga. Like Galaga, formations of ships enter each stage in attack waves, swoop about and fire at you and the settle back down into a central formation. You circle about their formation and always point and fire inwards while they rest in a space well (Tempest). Actually it is more like you and the enemy ships are moving through a circular space corridor, or worm-hole. After the fourth attack wave arrives, a set of three satellites appears outside the formation. When the middle satellite is eliminated, you are given dual shot (firing) capability.

In Gyruss, you pilot a small spaceship trying to make its way from outer Neptune to Earth. Along the way you will encounter waves of alien attackers. These enemy aliens fly in a variety of patterns while trying to block your path. As if that were not enough, you must ... avoid satellites and meteors.

The 2004 videogame Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas contains a playable homage to Gyruss, called They Crawled from Uranus! It is much simpler than Gyruss, with a static background, and only one kind of enemy.
