Guyana’s Portuguese inhabitants are the descendants of indentured laborers brought mainly from the island of Madeira in the 19th century. They did not work as agricultural laborers for long; many became urban shopkeepers and merchants. Guyanese of Portuguese descent have not preserved their native language. Indentured laborers ... came to Guyana from China in the 19th century. Many Guyanese of Chinese ancestry now own shops. The few British inhabitants of Guyana are generally employed by the sugar firms or by the government.

Orealla Trip: A small village of indigenous peoples of Guyana made up of Amerindians. The village is on the Corentyne River, overlooking Suriname. Most of the people live in the jungle. Orealla is the Big town in this region. Having been in the small village it is peaceful and simple. Their are no electricity, no cars and the main road is a 8 foot wide dirt path.

MCC’s two-year, $6.7 million Threshold Program with Guyana seeks to improve Guyana’s performance on MCC’s Fiscal Policy indicator. Specifically, the grant will help the Government of Guyana implement its new value-added tax (VAT) system and develop ways to assist and educate taxpayers, while at the same time helping the government better plan and control spending. Additionally, the grant will help reduce the number of days and costs associated with starting a business by modernizing and streamlining the business registration process.

The production of balatá (natural latex) was once big business in Guyana. Most of the balata bleeding in Guyana took place in the foothills of the Kanuku Mountains in the Rupununi. Early exploitation ... took place in the North West District, but most of the trees in the area were destroyed by illicit bleeding methods that involved cutting down the trees rather than making incisions in them.

In the most conservative scenario, using final molasses, producing 8.8 litres of ethanol per tonne of processed sugar cane, the report estimated that 30.8 million litres of ethanol may be obtained annually from the sugar cane industry in Guyana. This would be nearly 3 times the anticipated demand of 11.5 million litres, if a mixture of gasoline with 10 percent ethanol was to be used in Guyana’s vehicles.
