The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is pleased to announce the initiation of The Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program (Borlaug Fellows Program) for Guyana. The Borlaug Fellows Program offers training and collaborative research opportunities in international agricultural science, leadership and policy. Training venues may include U.S. universities, government agencies, private companies, not-for-profit institutions and international agricultural research centers. Each Fellow will be assigned a mentor who will coordinate the Fellow’s training and will visit the Fellow's home institution in Guyana after completion of the training.

Race and ideology have been the dominant political influences in Guyana. Since the split of the multiracial PPP in 1955, politics has been based more on ethnicity than on ideology. From 1964 to 1992, the PNC dominated Guyana's politics. The PNC draws its support primarily from urban Afro-Guyanese, and for many years declared itself a socialist vanguard party whose purpose was to make Guyana a nonaligned socialist state, in which the party, as in communist countries, was above all other institutions.

Despite the thoroughness of the nationalization programmes of the early 1970s by the Government of Guyana, a few small newspapers survived. Several legalistic and bureaucratic measures had to be employed by the state to attempt to cajole them into conformity or clobber them into closure.
