In case you hadn't heard, Gunship is a helicopter simulation, and a pretty comprehensive one at that. It's along the same sort of lines as DI's Tomahawk, but a little bit more complicated, to say the least. For a start, one glance at the 84 page manual will be enough to put many people off. But don't be one of them, 'cos Gunship should be at the top of your Christmas present list.

Gunships are ... equipped with a "belly cannon" which releases a matter disintegration blast, similar to that of the suppression device, directly beneath the gunship. This attack is never used during the single player mission, nor Episode One, but additional gunships spawned by players have been witnessed using such an attack. Analysis of the single player missions that were released in an uncompiled format reveals that the gunships were deliberately set not to use this weapon. It is interesting to note that this form of attack is also used by Xen's Manta Rays in the original Half-Life, mainly witnessed at the beginning of Opposing Force, in which a group of Manta Rays destroy military aircraft. However, this is most probably just a coincidence, as it was confirmed by Marc Laidlaw that the Combine was not present on Xen during the events of Half-Life.

The original Gunship was designed by Sid Meier and "the great" Andy Hollis and released in 1986. Many rotor-heads of the computer sim genre cut their teeth on this masterpiece. Unfortunately the latest batch of cookies lost something in the ingredients. The latest installment has a watered down, arcade-like avionics, lack of engine controls, inability to jettison weapons and stores and lack of autorotation modeling, It does... do a few things the right way. It's shear graphics performance and interface come-off with an overall stunning presentation that would do it's predecessors proud.
