Gunpowder, the first explosive, was being made in the town by 1573. Water-power was needed to drive the machinery; and the first factory (the Home Works) developed along Westbrook, the watercourse which feeds Faversham Creek. By the 18th century it occupied a site about a mile long, from close to the A2 at Ospringe to the head of the Creek.

Gunpowder tea production dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907) but it was first introduced to Taiwan in the 1800s. Although the individual leaves were formerly rolled by hand, today most gunpowder tea is rolled by machines (though the highest grades are still rolled by hand). Rolling tea leaves into gunpowder tea renders the leaves less susceptible to physical damage and allows them to retain more of their flavor and aroma. In addition, it allows certain types of oolong teas to be aged for decades if they are cared for by being occasionally roasted.

Gunpowder was first discovered in China in the 9th century. The discovery appears to have been by accident by alchemists seeking the elixir of immortality, and the first references to gunpowder appear as warnings in alchemy texts not to mix certain materials together. By the 10th century, gunpowder began to be used for military purposes in China in the form of rockets and explosive bombs fired from catapults. The first reference to cannon appears in 1126 when oil bamboo tubes were used to launch missiles at the enemy. Eventually bamboo tubes were replaced by metal tubes, and the oldest cannon in China dates from 1290. From China, the military use of gunpower appears to have spread to Japan and Europe.

In the last couple of years, the homeopathic Gunpowder has been used with over a hundred cases of wildlife admitted for rehabilitation. The group of rehabilitators and their veterinarians found the Gunpowder to be effective with a variety of wounds. The following describes several of the cases. All of the rehabilitators using homeopathy had the appropriate state and federal rehabilitation permits, were experienced with the species admitted, and followed effective rehabilitation practices (diet, caging, etc.). They had attended training on the use of classical homeopathy with wildlife, had repertories and materia medicas, and consulted with veterinarians. Most had Clarke’s monograph on Gunpowder.
