Gummo Marx: Marx Brothers
built 229 days ago
On-stage and in film, the Marx Brothers' antic comedy won millions of fans and left a major pop cultural legacy. Movies like The Coconuts (1929) and A Night at the Opera (1935) remain popular, and both Groucho Marx's wisecracking persona and Harpo Marx's silent, woman-crazed clown remain well-known icons. From their beginnings in vaudeville during the 1910s, to their rise as popular film comics during the Depression, Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo, and Zeppo Marx delivered an energetic, anarchic comedy that seemed to overflow both the stage and the screen. The Marx Brothers were the sons of Jewish immigrants from Germany, and all were born in New York City to Simon Marrix (later changed to Marx) and Minnie Schonberg. The first son, Manfred, died in infancy. Leonard Marx was born on March 22, 1887, and later adopted Chico as his stage name; Adolph Marx (later Arthur) was born on November 23, 1888, and adopted the stage name Harpo; Julius Henry Marx was born on October 2, 1890, and used Groucho as his stage name; Milton Marx was born on October 23, 1892, and adapted the alias Gummo; and Herbert Marx, born on February 25, 1901, would be known as Zeppo.

Buy The Marx Brothers at Art.com After one performance, away from Minnie's watchful eye, the Marx Brothers' singing act broke out into some of the madcap comedy for which they would later become famous. In response to a request for a different act for a second week's engagement, they started performing a sketch titled "Fun in Hi Skule" (1912) which they had seen performed many times in vaudeville. This musical comedy gave them room to test out their comedic muscles. A later sequel, "Mr. Green's Reception" (1913), followed afterwards, as did "Home Again" (1914), "The Cinderella Girl" (1918), "On the Mezzanine Floor" (1921).
The Black Marx Brother- Richard Marx Instead of being Black People, the Marx Brothers were Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo, Zeppo, Dumbo, Lobo, Bimbo, Bilbo, Richard, and sometime Soviet mascot Karl. They were ... the ruling family of China during a short but glorious time after the fall of the Chun Li Dynasty.
Herbert Marx (February 25, 1901 – November 29, 1979) is best known as Zeppo Marx, the name he used when he performed with his brothers, The Marx Brothers. There are different theories to where Zeppo got his stage name: Groucho once said that the name was derived from the Zeppelin, a new invention at the time of his birth. However, it is more commonly suggested that the name derived from that of another vaudeville performer a chimpanzee, named Mr. Zippo, whom Herbert resembled. It is possible that both are true and that some punning was involved. (Another story tells of the time the Marxes were pretending to be gentleman farmers in the Chicago suburbs in order to avoid conscription into World War I. The brothers would refer to each other by "hayseed" names like Zeke and Zep; Zep became Zeppo.) Zeppo appeared in the first five Marx Brothers movies, as a straight man and romantic lead, before leaving the team. According to a 1925 newspaper article, he ... made a solo appearance in the Adolphe Menjou comedy A Kiss in the Dark, but no known copy of the film exists, and it is not clear if he actually appeared in the finished film.
The Usual Suspects Julius "GROUCHO" Marx - 1890-1977 (86) did 14 movies with his brothers, Leonard "CHICO" Marx - 1887-1961 (74) and Adolph "HARPO" Marx - 1888-1964 (75). He was the leader of Hollywood's most famous comedy trio. Two other brothers, Milton "GUMMO" Marx - 1897-1977 (80) and Herbert "ZEPPO" Marx - 1901-1979 (78) worked at various times with their more famous brothers. The Marx Brothers were the wildest and wackiest lunatics in film history. They were extraordinary anarchists attacking everything from authority figures, the system and education, to politics, sex, war and the police, to the upper classes and culture in general. They combined their own brand of slapstick physical comedy with quick witted one-liners and puns and proceeded to wreak havoc everywhere they went, mostly uninvited.

Gummo died on April 21, 1977, in Palm Springs, California. His death was not reported to Groucho, who by that time had become so ill and weak that it was thought the news would be of further detriment to his health. He is entombed in a crypt in the Freedom Mausoleum in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, in Glendale, California. Gummo's older brother, Chico, is in a crypt across the hall from him.
