Gulf War Syndrome
built 815 days ago
[I]t is not just the veterans themselves who are suffering, many believe that Gulf War Syndrome is responsible for horrendous birth defects in their children. One American veteran's son was born with Goldenhar's Syndrome, a non-hereditary birth defect that can be caused by exposure to environmental toxins. When Casey was born his face was lopsided and he had an ear missing, seven hours later doctors discovered that many of his internal organs were not connected. He is now kept alive by being hooked up to a feeding tube 18 hours a day. As he has no functioning colon his mother has to suction his body wastes through another tube 10 times a day. It could be claimed that this case is unique... Hilary Meredith, the veterans’ solicitor, says that of the 1300 veterans she represents 60 have children with birth defects.

The concept of a "Gulf War Syndrome" is appealing. It comes at a time when public distrust of Government is at an all-time high. It turns on conspiracies, a favorite theme of television producers. It provides the media with an endless parade of self-perceived victims. It provides a feeding trough for serious scientists, since funding is abundant, and for every charlatan with a newsworthy theory. It is a field day for politicians who solemnly promise to "get to the bottom" of the problem.

Many with Gulf War Syndrome have been infected with a contagious form of the organism mycoplasma incognitus (MI). This organism was first discovered at the U.S. Army Institute of Pathology in 1989 as a presence in seven out of ten patients with AIDS. The research of two renowned microbiologists, Drs. Garth and Nancy Nicolson, has ... lead them to a tentative conclusion that the Mycoplasma may have been genetically engineered in a U.S. lab.

Many Gulf War Syndrome sufferers, backed by alternative academic research, believe that their condition is related to the use of organophosphates in insect repellent issued to soldiers fighting in Iraq and Kuwait. Others have linked the symptoms - which include muscle fatigue, loss of co-ordination and even problems encountered by sufferers of autism - to the use of vaccines and even the depleted uranium ammunition during the conflict. The Journal-backed campaign for justice for sufferers has now been running for almost a decade.

[One] committee member, Dr. Robert Haley, chief of epidemiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, said the Bush administration has made a ``major turn" in resolving the Gulf War dilemma. It is time to define Gulf War illnesses and their causes, develop diagnostic tests, find treatments and create strategies for prevention, he said.
