Álvaro Colom of the centre-left National Union for Hope (UNE) on Nov. 4, 2007, won the presidency of Guatemala in a runoff election, defeating retired general Otto Pérez Molina of the right-wing Patriot Party (PP). Colom, who would take office in 2008, took 53% of the vote.
