Guangzhou: Guangzhou Metro
built 652 days ago
The Guangzhou Metro (廣州地鐵) is a metro system in the city of Guangzhou in Guangdong Province of the People's Republic of China. It is the fourth city in China to build an underground railway system after Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai. Construction began in 1993 and the first line was completed and opened in 1997 and 1999. The 60 station system is operated by the Guangzhou Metro Corporation, established in 1992 as a state owned enterprise under the Guangzhou government.

In the past 50 years, Guangzhou has grown rapidly from a coastal trade port into an industrial and commercial city. Due to its proximity, it shares many similarities with Hong Kong- the Cantonese language and food, a new metro and of course, the zest for high-rise living.
The street scene of Guangzhou. Since ancient times, Guangzhou has ... been regarded as a commercial metropolis. In fact, Guangdong Province was considered as a place in China where merchants from home and abroad could come and seek an easy fortune. Since Chinese reforms led to an 'Open Door' foreign policy, Guangdong is usually selected first as a testing ground for new policies, giving it an unparalleled opportunity to develop in advance of other cities. The 'First Fair of China' or the Chinese Export Commodities Fair (Canton Fair) has always been held in Guangzhou for over 90 times since its opening. Now, the stars of comprehensive shopping malls, commercial streets or special markets are always within your reach wherever you stand in the city. Guangzhou is also known as the 'Hometown of Overseas Chinese' and the economic growth of the city owes much to them.
Today, as it has been for a millennium or more, Guangzhou is overcrowded. About four million people live in the city, almost seven million in the metro area. It is an overcrowding that has served the Chinese world well. For living in and around an international port, the Cantonese eventually decide that maybe life would be better elsewhere -- outside China. The result is some 20 million Cantonese living in places like Malaysia, Vietnam, Canada, Australia and South Africa.
