Try accras, crispy croquettes of cod or malanga root, or feroce d'avocat, a spicy avocado treat. The new Académie de Guadeloupe implemented a three-year plan in 1999 with a focus on important issues for the schools of Guadeloupe. One of the goals is to reduce the failure and dropout rates, especially in the first year of the lycée, where those rates have been significant. Another objective is the mastery of French: the goal is to improve the effectiveness in the teaching of French and in teaching other subjects in French in Guadeloupe's multilingual society. A final goal encourages teachers to develop activities on the theme of citizenship to include promoting non-violence and the teaching of the skills of democracy: civility, listening to others, and constructing reasonable arguments in support of one's ideas.

The major tourist activities of Guadeloupe include sightseeing, photography, hiking and water sports such as surfing, snorkeling and swimming. A desirable sight for tourists is Terre-de-Haut, with a quaint central village and harbor, good beaches and restaurants.
