Fozzie in Groucho glasses at the El Sleezo Cafe. Duck Soup featured Groucho and Harpo in a now famous mirror scene: in an empty hallway, Harpo would mime to be the reflection of Groucho, confusing him in the process. A similar routine was done in The Muppet Show episode 104 between Kermit and Robot Kermit.
marx Although the Marx Brothers' theatrical characters were based on real people and actual experiences, their mannerisms and costumes were developed through trial and error during their years in vaudeville. For Groucho this all began in 1905 when he joined a ' travelling troupe as a boy soprano. He got the job out of economic necessity:
Groucho and Elmo The "Groucho glasses," combining Groucho's trademarked spectacles with fake nose, moustache, and (usually) thick eyebrows, have appeared as a recurring Muppet prop. Kermit the Frog and friends used them as a disguise when raiding the Mallory Gallery in The Great Muppet Caper. The Fozzie Bear Action Figure came with a pair of the glasses. Red Fraggle donned a pair in the Fraggle Rock episode "The Secret Society of Poobahs," and Elmo can be seen wearing them in Music Works Wonders.
Famous for his trademark moustache and his skills as a comedian, Groucho Marx worked with both his siblings and individually .... Often ad libbing, he starred in a series of stage shows, improvising insults to dowagers with his unique chicken walking lope and his trademark moustache and eyebrows.
Groucho was ... gradually creating his familiar look. The swallowtail coat was added when he played a teacher in a classroom sketch. The cigar was a useful comedy prop to make him look older, and also helpful to puff on while trying to remember a line. Even Groucho's distinctive walk came from a sketch that required him to portray an older man. Groucho hunched his shoulders and leaned forward, but when he walked quickly across the stage, the audience laughed, so he continued to do it. His painted-on mustache was born when he arrived late at the theater, and didn't have time to apply his fake mustache, so he just smeared greasepaint under his nose.
marx Although the job didn't last long, and three times he found himself stranded on the road without money, Groucho persisted. Eventually he landed work with the Gus Edwards school act - his first professional encounter with stage comedy.
