Groucho Marx (1890-1977): Marx Brothers
built 199 days ago
Groucho Marx is arguably the most famous, iconic comedian of all-time. It's funny to think that for all the great films and stage appearances he made throughout his career both in the Marx Brothers act and solo later in his life, Groucho Marx actually seemed to prefer this modestly-produced TV series above all others in which he was involved. Groucho Marx was the emcee and star of this filmed quiz show, which had begun on radio in 1947. Although it was ostensibly a game show, the series' most important asset was the humor injected by Groucho into the interviews he did with the contestants. Contestants were picked primarily based on the potential they had to be foils for Groucho's barbs, which they seemed to love. At the start of each show the audience was informed of the night's secret word.

Groucho Marx did 26 movies total, of these 15 were with his brothers Chico and Harpo. Of those 15 movies only 14 were actually released. The first movie was a silent film, that Groucho is said to of cut up the movie into guitar picks, to prevent it's release. Needless to say, he didn't like it. Although students of the cinema still try to find a copy of the film, feeling it has great historical value. They were one of the world's most famous comedy teams. They had their own zany brand of slapstick comedy.
marx Three years later Minnie Marx gathered her sons (Groucho, Gummo, and later Harpo) together into a singing act called first The Three Nightingales, then The Six Mascots. She was their agent, and sometimes joined the act with her sister, Hannah. Sam Marx (known as Frenchie), the father of the Marx Brothers, stayed at home with the cooking and housework, as well as a threadbare tailoring business. Apparently this pioneering role- sharing worked out perfectly: Sam was a superb cook while, in Groucho's words:
The Usual Suspects Julius "GROUCHO" Marx - 1890-1977 (86) did 14 movies with his brothers, Leonard "CHICO" Marx - 1887-1961 (74) and Adolph "HARPO" Marx - 1888-1964 (75). He was the leader of Hollywood's most famous comedy trio. Two other brothers, Milton "GUMMO" Marx - 1897-1977 (80) and Herbert "ZEPPO" Marx - 1901-1979 (78) worked at various times with their more famous brothers. The Marx Brothers were the wildest and wackiest lunatics in film history. They were extraordinary anarchists attacking everything from authority figures, the system and education, to politics, sex, war and the police, to the upper classes and culture in general. They combined their own brand of slapstick physical comedy with quick witted one-liners and puns and proceeded to wreak havoc everywhere they went, mostly uninvited.

Groucho (born Julius Henry Marx) was the first of the brothers to start a stage career, entering the industry at age 15. Soon after, his brothers (Chico, Harpo, Gummo and, later, Zeppo) joined the act. Their first joint performance was in "Fun in Hi Skule" (1912), and the comedic chemistry was immediate.

A perfect showcase for the wit and whimsy of comic genius Groucho Marx (1890-1977), this three-disc set collects a priceless archive of 18 complete and uncut You Bet Your Life episodes filmed between 1950 and 1960. Beginning on radio in 1947, You Bet Your Life was ostensibly a quiz show, but it mostly served as a forum for Groucho to ridicule the contestants. It soon became a hugely successful TV series, running for 423 episodes and assuring there would be life for Groucho after the Marx Brothers. Groucho's one-liners and snappy comebacks hilariously demonstrate Groucho’s mastery of humor honed over decades of live performance.
