Embattled former prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland is in the midst of yet a new brouhaha. It appears the Norwegian health system will foot the bill for operations that should have been paid for by France, Brundtland's current place of residence.

Lauren Groff In 1981, Gro Harlem Brundtland became the first woman Prime Minister of Norway. In this memoir, Brundtland recounts the events of her professional life. Topics include her stint as minister of the environment, surviving chauvinistic attacks in the media, her bipartisan marriage, and getting the Winter Olympics to Norway. Brundtland is currently the Director General of the World Health Organization.

In her life, Gro Harlem Brundtland has served society in three distinct capacities—as a medical doctor, a politician, and an environmentalist. She initially worked as a physician and then moved into the political arena as an environmental minister in the Norwegian government. Her success in this capacity led to her election as Norway's first female prime minister and influence on international treaties and conferences.
In 1998, Gro Harlem Brundtland was appointed Director-General of the World Health Organisation. In this position, her many skills as doctor, politician, activist and manager came together. She retired from the WHO in summer 2003.

Brundtland has received several international awards, including the Third World Prize (1988), the Indira Gandhi Prize (1988), the Onassis Foundation's Delphi Prize (1992), and the Charlemagne Prize (1994). She is married to Arne Olav Brundtland, a research director at the Oslo Institute of Foreign Studies, and has four children.
