Grimsby Town joined the footballing world in the year 1889 and reached the top flight in 1901, only lasting two years in the Promised Land. The Marines finest season was arguably the 1933 – 1934 campaign as they won the second division in the most emphatic fashion. In 1936 and 1939 they enjoyed fine FA Cup runs reaching the semi finals. After the Second World War, the Mariners showed infuriating inconsistency. They nearly reached the top flight again in 1984 as they finished the season off in fifth place. They struggled during the late 1980’s, suffering relegation... they gradually improved during the 1990’s and later on became a second tier football side again.

Grimsby Town will be making their second trip to the North East in the space of a week. The game at the TFM Arena ended in a goalless draw and Rodger admits he will enjoy going back to Darlington's home ground. The Grimsby assistant manager still appears to be a little annoyed by how Quakers took three points earlier in the season - as a result Grimsby players were kept back to watch the game again. Since then they have improved a lot.

Quakers take on Grimsby Town this weekend as the home side look to build on their good result at Stockport County last Saturday. Russell Slade's men will undoubtedly provide a sterner test than the Hatters as the Humberside club are enjoying their best season since suffering relegation to League two. Whilst Quakers will run out to this fixture on the back of a good 3-0 win Grimsby suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Bristol Rovers in their last game.

The present Town Hall is the fourth to be built in Grimsby. The first building was constructed in the 13th century with a newer Town Hall being built in 1395. Records show that it had a storehouse, a jail and a chamber.

In 2001 Grimsby Town were a second-flight football team and binge drinking was called “going out”. Quite a few England fans probably indulged in that pastime after the 5-1 win in Germany on September1. So imagine the double hangover that awaited Town supporters as their side chose the same day to move top of the Football League.
