built 349 days ago
Grey's Anatomy is a medical drama about several first-year surgical interns at a Seattle hospital that began airing on ABC on March 27, 2005. It debuted in the slot following Desperate Housewives, but in fall 2006 ABC moved the show to Thursdays at 9 pm, where it currently competes successfully against CSI. According to Nielson ratings, season two averaged 19.9 million viewers per episode, making it the fifth most watched TV show in America for the 2005–06 television season.

It's always a pleasant surprise when a soundtrack contains an interesting collection of under-heard or under-appreciated tunes, but it's to be expected from Grey's Anatomy--a TV show that is packed with sharp dialogue, honest characters, and wall-to-wall good music. The head-bobbing starts immediately when the Postal Service opens things up "Such Great Heights," a crafty track that will provide indie rock fans who still love the Pet Shop Boys their guilty fix. A few songs in, the cleverness continues with the dysfunctional-woman anthem "Portions for Foxes" by L.A.'s Rilo Kiley, a tune that will have you quoting sharp lyrics to Desperate girlfirends for days. Other must-have music includes Mike Doughty (former lead singer of Soul Coughing) with "Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well," and the gorgeous Bjork-meets-Cat-Power stylings of Inara George on the lucious "Fools In Love." The disc highlight (from a talented vocalist named Roisin Murphy) is the sassy "Ruby Blue"--the kind of Macy Gray-funk that makes you want to see her live, immediately. As an added bonus, the liner notes have a wonderful mini-essay by two of the executive producers, providing an enjoyable description of the show's attention to detail, and the cast and crew's deep love of music.

Having proven that it could stand on its own two feet without Desperate Housewives as its lead-in, Grey's Anatomy remained in its new Thursday-night slot as the seriocomic medical series entered its third season. In addition to established stars Ellen Pompeo (intern Meredith Grey) Patrick Dempsey (Dr. Derek Shepherd), Katherine Heigl (intern "Izzie" Stevens), and Isaiah Washington (Dr. Preston Burke), former recurring players Eric Dane (as plastic surgeon Mark Sloan) and Sara Ramirez (Dr. Callie Torres) have now been promoted to "regular" status. The season begins as the Seattle Grace Hospital medical team's favorite bartender Joe (Steven W. Bailey) provides those who came in late with a quick run-down of the events of the previous two seasons.

ABC ... owns ESPN, a leader in cable sports broadcasting with a stable of channels including ESPN2, ESPN Classic, and ESPN News, as well as its flagship channel. In addition, the company operates mass market publisher Hyperion. ABC is the cornerstone of Disney-ABC Television Group, the TV division of parent Walt Disney.
