She became famous in Sweden when she acted in the silent film Gösta Berlings saga (the film was based on a novel by Selma Lagerlöf). She went to Hollywood, and soon became one of the world's most popular movie stars. She quit acting and retired in 1942 and kept to herself for the rest of her life.
Born Greta Lovisa Gustafson on September 18, 1905, in Stockholm, Sweden, Greta Garbo would overcome her modest background to pursue her dream of becoming an acclaimed actress. European film critics praised her as "a soul- revealing Nordic princess." In July 1925, Garbo arrived in America with a contract to star in MGM films. She was nineteen years old.
Born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden, Garbo got her start in films in a publicity short for a department store. After training with the Royal Dramatic Theater of Stockholm, she appeared in Mauritz Stiller’s “Gösta Berlings Saga” (“The Atonement of Gösta Berling”), the film which brought her to the attention of MGM studio chief Louis B. Mayer. While traveling in Europe, Mayer signed Garbo to the contract that would bring her to Hollywood in 1925.
