Greta Garbo: Films
built 656 days ago
Greta Garbo is arguably the quintessential embodiment of the Hollywood star system. Her beautiful, glamorous, Sphinx-like image--carefully cultivated by her employer Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer--captivated American and European viewers of both the silent screen of the 20s and sound films of the 30s. Garbo's personal decision to leave her film career in 1941 and maintain a notoriously private, reclusive lifestyle has only further enhanced her mystique.
In 1924 Garbo would make her big break through when famed director Mauritz Stiller gave her a part in his film Gösta Berlings Saga. Following the films success both Garbo and Stiller were offered contracts with MGM in California. Her first film there would be The Torrent, and slowly but surely Garbo became one of the silent eras biggest stars, making a series of films including Love and A Woman of Affairs. It was during these early Hollywood years that Garbo ... came close to getting married. But at the last minute she left groom John Gilbert standing at the altar in 1927. She would never marry, but rumours and speculation of her love life and interests would continue for years.

Despite the arrogance and distrust Greta had displayed toward him, Pastor Ahlfeldt helped her get her first bit part in films. He knew that her sister, Alva, was ... interested in acting, and so he recommended both girls as extras in En Lyckoriddare (A Soldier of Fortune), directed by John Brunius. Each sister received twenty kronor, something like five dollars, for her work. More important to Greta than her salary was the discovery that she was extremely photogenic. Brunius assured Greta of this when he gave her a few dozen of the best prints, saying, "These could prove useful to you in securing future jobs in film."...

The 1934 Greta Garbo version of W. Somerset Maugham's 1925 novel isn't a complete creaker, but it's definitely on the arthritic side. So last year's moviegoing offered no bigger surprise than seeing a presumably "exhumed" project turned into such a sensual film for grown-ups.

Greta Garbo in 1924 Garbo's first sound picture was Anna Christie (1930), based on a play by American dramatist Eugene O'Neill. The sound scene was a tour de force, the longest, continuous sound take of the time. Because of the film's extraordinary success, MGM created a German language version with Garbo and an entirely new cast. Garbo's ability to act successfully in two languages demonstrates her remarkable range and linguistic talent.

In the 1930 film, Anna Christie, Garbo's seductive voice was heard for the first time when she uttered the words, "Gimme a whiskey-with ginger ale on the side-and don't be stingy, baby." Her finest films are Grand Hotel, Queen Christina, Anna Karenina, Camille, and Ninotchka. The legendary actress won two New York Film Critics Awards for Best Actress and received four Academy Award nominations.
