Born Greta Gustafsson, Garbo grew up on Södermalm in Stockholm. She went to work at an early age, the PUB department store being one of her early employers. She made her film debut in 1921 in "Peter the Tramp". The following year, she began studies at the Royal Dramatic Theatre, where she was discovered by director Mauritz Stiller. Stiller took her to Hollywood and gave her the stage name Garbo.
