The Gregorian calendar is the most widely usedcalendarin the world. A modification of theJulian calendar, it was first proposed by theCalabriandoctorAloysius Lilius, and was decreed byPope Gregory XIII, for whom it was named, on24 February1582 via thepapal bullInter gravissimas issued from his seat (Villa Mondragone). Years in the calendar are numbered from the traditional birth year ofJesus, which has been labeled the "anno Domini" (AD) era, and is sometimes labeled the "common era" or the "Christian Era" (CE).

Sweden had made an attempt to gradually introduce the Gregorian Calendar in 1700, by adopting a special Swedish calendar. However the change over didn't take place until 1753, where February 17 was followed by March 1.

The Doomsday algorithm is a method by which you can discern which of the 14 calendar variations should be used in any given year (after the Gregorian reformation). It is based on the last day in February, referred to as the Doomsday.
