garson10.jpg (22583 bytes) Titian haired Greer Garson was one of the most popular actress during the 1940's. Unlike most young actresses beginning their careers in Hollywood, Garson was already in her mid thirties when she made her first film. Her elegant and intelligent demeanor struck a cord with the movie going public and her popularity soared at MGM. She possessed a beautiful speaking voice and her refined acting style earned her six Academy Award nominations. She ... appeared in five films that earned Best Picture nominations.

Garson was born in London, where she was on the professional stage from 1932. MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer discovered her for films, and she made a hit in her first film, Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939), for which she won the first of seven Oscar® nominations. The award itself came to her for Mrs. Miniver (1942), in which she gave her definitive screen portrayal as a London housewife facing the Blitz with a courage that inspired filmgoers of the day in both England and the U.S. Garson enjoyed another huge success with Random Harvest (1942), in which she plays the loyal wife of amnesiac Ronald Colman.

Greer was signed to a contract with MGM and appeared in her first American film in 1939. The movie in question was GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS which won rave reviews and garnered her first nomination as Best Actress.( She would receive six more nominations!) Already she was a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood.

Garson and Laurence Olivier in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Encouraged about Garson's prospects, MGM quickly cast her opposite Robert Taylor (left) and Lew Ayres in the half-baked romantic comedy REMEMBER? (1939) about a husband and wife who are given a memory-erasing medication when their marriage goes on the rocks. The poor writing and direction as well as the slapstick antics (such as the mud puddle at left) did not sit well with critics or audiences, and the film flopped badly.
