In Greek mythology, Minos was a king of Crete (son of Zeus and Europa). He was a philanderer, and this displeased his wife Pasiphae who blamed Aphrodite. He demanded a yearly tribute of young men and girls from Athens for the Minotaur. After his death, he became a judge in Hades.

In the following essay, Meagher examines the depiction of women as both goddesses and humans in Greek mythology, specifically in Hesiod's Theogony and Works and Days. Meagher notes the ways in which Hesiod subverts earlier oral traditions, in which women were birth goddesses and creators rather than (as in Olympian myths) created by male gods to bring misery and death to human men.

In Greek mythology, Hynos or Somnus, was a son of Night, and the twin brother of Thanatos (death), with whom he lived in deep subterranean darkness at the entrance to Tartarus. His influence extended to gods as well as men, and by the latter he was viewed as a special benefactor, giving the weary refreshing rest, and sufferers alleviation of their pain.

In the original sense, therefore, a mythology is an attempt to bring sense to the stylized narratives that the Greeks recited at festivals, whispered at shrines, and bandied about at aristocratic banquets. Since few breeds of men are more prone to squabbling than poets, priests and aristocrats, contradictions in the material are rife. Moreover, they are part of the fun.
