The evidence for the oral traditional basis of ancient Greek literature is both internal and comparative. The decisive impetus for research has been the comparative evidence of living oral traditions. The two most prominent names in the history of this research are Milman Parry (collected papers published posthumously in Parry 1971) and Albert Lord (definitive books published in 1960, 1991,1995). The first article in this volume and in the whole series, "Homer, Parry, and Huso" (Lord 1948), provides a vivid account of Parry's discovery procedures.

Ancient Greek literature refers to literature written in Ancient Greek from the oldest surviving written works in the Greek language until approximately the fifth century AD and the rise of the Byzantine Empire. The Greek language arose from the proto-Indo-European language, though roughly one-third of its words cannot be derived from various reconstructions of that tongue. A number of alphabets and syllabaries had been used to render Greek, but surviving Greek literature was written in a Phoenician-derived alphabet that arose primarily in Greek Ionia and was fully adopted by Athens by the fifth century BC.

The Classics Department at the University of Oregon invites applications for a tenure-track position in Ancient Greek Literature at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin September 2008. PhD is required by the time of appointment and candidates must demonstrate exceptional potential or achievement as scholars and teachers. Primary teaching responsibilities will include Greek and Latin language and literature at all levels, lower division through M.A., and large lecture courses on classical civilization and ancient culture. The department especially welcomes candidates with strengths in Homer and Archaic or Classical Greek poetry, and who are able to contribute to the University of Oregon's Humanities program.

Alfred North Whitehead once claimed that all of philosophy is but a footnote to Plato.
