Grand Portage National Monument: Trading Post

The community at Grand Portage contains the tribal headquarters, a community store, and the Trading Post, as well as other tribal businesses. The Gitchi Onigaming Community Center was built in 1994 that offers a wide variety of recreational activities, a swimming pool, a senior center, a teen center, a computer room, library, and powwow grounds. The center ... provides services for daycare and Head Start programs. A log school building has provided the elementary school in Grand Portage since the 1930's. In 1997 a new school for student's K-6th grade was opened and linked to the community center. As a state public school operating under special legislation, the new facility will be leased to the Cook County Public School system.

After establishing Grand Portage State Park, the DNR posted an opening for a naturalist. Gagnon applied. It was a lark, really, and he was astonished to be hired. When the park manager position opened, he applied -- again without any expectations. He got the promotion and again was keenly aware of the irony.

Well worth a visit is the historical reconstruction, complete with re-enactors of the period, of the old Grand Portage Trading Post. Also see the beginning of the historical Grand Portage and get a little exercise with a hike to the top of Rose Mountain with a view of the Grand Portage bay.
