One of the Liberal Arts, Grammar was described as the 'learned and articulate voice, spoken in a correct manner', and was traditionally depicted as a sage, or a teacher with a whip for discipline. In the 17th century a new image emerged, showing Grammar as a woman watering plants: "Just as plants are nourished by moderate application of water in succession, in the same fashion, the mind is made to grow by properly adapted tasks."

Grammar and Writing in 1996, originally to help his students write reports and research papers. In addition, he wanted to create a place where students could look up grammatical issues for themselves. The Guide to Grammar and Writing rapidly took on a life of its own, mushrooming into a wildly popular site, with upwards of 30,000 hits per day from all over the world. It was a labor of love for Charles and, when he retired in 2005, he continued working on it.

Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling Purdue University's OWL (Online Writing Lab) offers a wonderful resource for everyone with this section of their site. You don't want to sabotage your job search with grammatical and/or spelling errors in your resume, cover letter, and other correspondence. Brush up on your knowledge here. It can't hurt, and it will probably help.

Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Handouts ~ Each of these topics is divided into sub-topics. These include explanatory material, examples and exercises. The explanatory material is first rate and thorough, accessible but not oversimplified. The pages all include printable versions and are use friendly. The grammar section is divided into five topics: adjectives and adverbs, nouns, prepositions, pronouns, sentence structure, and verbs.

The Greek grammarian Dionysius Thrax wrote the Art of Grammar, upon which many later Greek, Latin, and other European grammars were based. With the spread of Christianity and the translation of the Scriptures into the languages of the new Christians, written literatures began to develop among previously nonliterate peoples. By the Middle Ages, European scholars generally knew, in addition to their own languages and Latin, the languages of their nearest neighbors. This access to several languages set scholars to thinking about how languages might be compared. The revival of classical learning in the Renaissance laid the foundation... for a misguided attempt by grammarians to fit all languages into the structure of Greek and Latin. More positively, medieval Christianity and Renaissance learning led to 16th- and 17th-century surveys of all the then-known languages in an attempt to determine which language might be the oldest.
