Graham Greene: Brighton Rock

After graduating with a B.A. in 1925, Greene was employed as a subeditor at the Nottingham Journal after two abortive positions at other companies. His dislike of Nottingham's seediness manifested in his later novel Brighton Rock. Here he met his future wife Vivien Dayrell-Browning when she wrote to point out some errors regarding Catholicism in his writings. Upon her urging, Greene took instructions in the faith and was received by the Church in 1926.

In 1936 Greene became the film critic of Spectator. Later he was appointed as the magazine's literary editor. During this period he published Brighton Rock (1938), The Confidential Agent (1939) and The Power and the Glory (1940).

In recording Leap Of Face, Graham wanted to make it clear to all who heard the album that he still knew how to rock. After the ambient rock vibe of 2004's Gaia Rising, the time was right for a return to his hard rock roots.

Greene had captured the feel of this kind of human tide a decade before he first came to Capri. In the opening pages of his masterpiece “Brighton Rock” (1938), he described the holiday crowds arriving in Brighton, 50,000 of them down from London for a day at the seaside, “stepping off in bewildered multitudes into fresh and glittering air.”
