* The United States Department of Education has taken steps that effectively weaken the graduation rate accountability provision of NCLB. In a controversial decision, Secretary of Education Rod Paige issued regulations that allow schools and districts to all but eliminate graduation rate accountability for minority subgroups. As a result, 39 states now set a “soft” Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goal for graduation rates, meaning they can avoid sanctions simply by exhibiting even the smallest degree of improvement from one year to the next. Only nine states hold schools and districts accountable for the low graduation rates of minority students despite congressional intent. If there were a minimum graduation rate requirement of 66 percent and the reports CPI approach was used, 46 states and the District of Columbia would fail to meet this benchmark for the basic education of its student population as a whole or for at least one major racial or ethnic student subgroup.

The educational campaign kicks off with Sallie Mae's new 'Be Debt Smart' Web site, http://www.salliemae.com/bedebtsmart, which offers free resources designed to educate consumers from high school through college graduation and beyond. 'Be Debt Smart' outlines the 10 rules of smart credit management including maintaining a good credit rating, using credit wisely and guarding against identity theft. To help consumers "be debt smart" when paying for college, the site recommends maximizing all free money and cheap money like scholarships, grants and federally guaranteed student loans before filling the financial aid gap with private loans. 'Be Debt Smart' ... provides tips for selecting a repayment plan that works with individuals' financial situation and that supports their financial goals.

The inaugural class of the Goodyear IT Power-Up Program will begin working at Goodyear after graduation next spring. The program will include a salary, interesting assignments, opportunities to work with corporate management, access to computers for training and educational use, along with mentoring and guidance throughout the program. Based on successful participation, students will have the opportunity to advance in the program toward graduation and full time employment at Goodyear.

Graduation Audits: Audits are completed once a semester and a hard copy of the audit is mailed to the student and adviser. The graduation audit is ... available online in CampusWEB. ONLY students who've applied for graduation and had an audit completed will be able to view their audit in CampusWEB. If paperwork comes in between mailed hard copies, you may see a change on the online audit. Pay close attention to the "updated date" on the CampusWEB audit!

It appears many families use high school graduation as an occasion to prepare college-bound students for their academic future. Asked when they first started preparing to go to college, 60 percent of the students told the survey they began shopping for tech products before August and 35 percent said they shopped for college electronics in June, or earlier.

Unlike some other institutions, SPC does not charge a graduation fee. However, there is a nominal fee for the cap and gown. You must pick up your cap and gown at the Follett's Bookstore on your home campus when you are measured. Purchasing Cap & Gown Please contact your campus bookstore to be measured for your royal blue cap and gown (you pay for and pick up on same day) between now and Friday, May 2, 2008. Students can purchase caps and gowns, graduation announcements and rings. Family and friends can find a variety of gifts for the graduate.
