Gout: Big Toes
built 631 days ago
Gout is a form of arthritis that primarily affects older males. It appears very quickly, often overnight, causing intense swelling and pain. The skin over the affected joints (usually those of the ankles and feet) is normally red and shiny. The ball of the big toe is the most common site for gout. Click here to view a Gout illustration.
Gout is a painful and potentially disabling form of arthritis that has been recognized since ancient times. Initial symptoms usually consist of intense episodes of painful swelling in single joints, most often in the feet (especially the big toe). Treatments are now available to control most cases of gout, but diagnosing this disorder can be difficult and treatment plans often have to be tailored for each person.
toe-gout.jpg Gout is known to affect many joints including the knee, wrists, fingers, elbows, thumbs, ankles and even instep! However, in the majority of cases (around 75%) it affects the big toe. Often the first signs of gout disease are big toe pain or big toe inflammation and tenderness.
