Gough Whitlam: Labor Party

Little more than six months ago, Gough Whitlam bounded into office with all the bounce of a caged kangaroo suddenly given the run of a green pasture. The first Labor Party leader to become Prime Minister of Australia in 23 years, he was fairly bursting with energy and new ideas (TIME, March 26). In February, a poll indicated that 62% of Australians approved of what he was doing. Whitlam is still bouncing, but fewer Aussies are marveling.

Gough Whitlam became Australia's 21st Prime Minister on 5 December 1972. His Labor government, the first after more than two decades, set out to change Australia through a wide-ranging reform program. Whitlam's term abruptly ended when his government was dismissed by the Governor-General on 11 November 1975.

Gough Whitlam first became a federal parliamentarian in 1953. He served as deputy party leader from 1960 to 1967 and was a member of the Shadow Cabinet. He was Leader of the Opposition from 1967 to 1972.

In April 2007, Gough and Margaret Whitlam were made life members of the Australian Labor Party. This was the first time anyone had become life members at the national level of the Party organisation.[28]

On Remembrance Day, 1975, the Governor-General of Australia, Sir John Kerr, sacked the Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam. The Dismissal was the culmination of almost three years of political conflict, as Whitlam's reforming Labor government rammed home overdue legislative reforms in the face of implacable, and increasingly bitter, conservative opposition. The focus of the Opposition's scheming was the Senate, where its leaders blocked supply in order to force a political crisis.
