Gough Whitlam: Ac Qc
built 629 days ago
Gough Whitlam refused to buckle. He insisted the government had a right to govern for a three-year stretch. That's when two people were put under intense pressure: Malcolm Fraser and the Governor General Sir John Kerr, who was expected to act as an independent constitutional umpire.

In addition to Gough Whitlam, other guests included the Mayor of Sutherland and local union officials of the ASU, including with NSW Branch Executive member and director of the Sutherland trade union club, Phil Bowering. The audience was a mixture of outdoor council workers, retired ASU electricity industry workers, local political and community activists and members of parliament.

When evaluating Gough Whitlam's response to the crisis it must be remembered that much of the criticism levelled towards it comes with the benefit of hindsight. There are many parallels with the current situation in Bougainville, and is there not more justification for an independent West Papua (Irian Jaya) whose indigenous people are distinctly Melanesian and suffer similar oppression? Yet Whitlam still attempts to justify his policies by denying human rights abuses in East Timor when he no longer needs to. His trust in Suharto was betrayed, and Indonesia acted shamefully. There lies the crux of Whitlam's failed policy. Yet while Indonesia is to be condemned for provoking unrest, its invasion, and its subsequent human rights abuses, it is to be ... understood in its concern for stability within its region.

This milestone of longevity is an opportunity to reflect on Gough Whitlam's life-long commitment to Australia's public life, but his remarkable longevity is hardly the greatest of Gough’s achievements. The quality of his contribution far outweighs the extent of his endurance.
Gough Whitlam's trip to China, 1973 The National Archives holds an extensive collection of Gough Whitlam's personal records. It comprises almost 100 series of records covering the period 1952รข€“78. Most of them were created by Whitlam as Prime Minister and as a Member of Parliament. The records include subject and correspondence files, media releases and speeches, Labor Party material, photographs, audio tapes, films, invitations and press clippings. Some relate to Whitlam's activities after he retired from politics.
