The first use of the term Goth in its present meaning is believed to have been on a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) TV program. Anthony H. Wilson, manager of Joy Division described the band as Gothic compared with the pop mainstream. The name stuck.
A Goth Primer Goth used to be a subclassification of punk. In the early to mid 80s, it emerged as a subculture in its own right, complete with its own graphic art, literature, music, and fashion. There is so much diversity within the gothic world that its members strongly resist attempts at definition and labeling.

PftR seem to have existed in a world where the early 80's heyday of Goth never ended. A place where Theatre of Hate would have ruled the world had they not broken up. And they did it without seeming to simply be retro-revisionists or, even more lame, a clone band. Occasionally pretentious lyrics, easily pulled off and a solid song-writing ability should have laid the goth-world at their feet. But like many excellent bands, it did not, and now their gone.

Goth was originally a term used to describe people with a taste for certain bands eg: Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, etc. in the '80s when punk started to fade out, and with wardrobes predominantly black.
Goth attire is characterized by Black on Black, long flowing garments and jewelry with various religious emblems. Piercing, tattooing, makeup and hair, often jet black and styled to round out the look.

Borlaugwrestling Maila Nurmi, whose "Vampira" TV persona pioneered the spooky-yet-sexy Goth aesthetic, has died. She was 85. Friends plan to transport Nurmi's casket in the same hearse she rode in when she served as grand marshal in a procession of hearses sponsored by Los Angeles' Petersen Automotive Museum -- a vintage 1951 vehicle that appeared in a scene of "Ed Wood."
