Of the four canonical gospels, Matthew is most closely aligned with the Jewish tradition, and the author was apparently Jewish. Most scholars consider the gospel, like every other book in the New Testament, to have been written in Koine Greek, though some experts maintain the traditional view that it was originally composed in Aramaic. The gospel is associated with noncanonical gospels written for Jewish Christians, such as the Gospel of the Hebrews.

Answer: It is important to understand that the dating of the Gospels and other New Testament books is at best an educated guess and at worst foolish speculation. For example, suggested dates for the writing of the Gospel of Matthew range from as early as A.D. 40 to as late as A.D. 140. This wide range of dates from scholars indicates the subjective nature of the dating process. Generally, one will find that the presuppositions of the scholars greatly influence their dating of the Gospels.

The Gospel in Brief is Tolstoy's version of the Gospels. Tolstoy integrated the canonical accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John into one unified version of Jesus' life and teaching. As he did this, Tolstoy ... left out the material from the Gospels that he felt was extraneous, such as the accounts of his miracles and of Jesus' resurrection. (Tolstoy was aware that Thomas Jefferson had undertaken a similar "revision" of the Gospels.) For Tolstoy, Jesus' teaching was a "light" that gave life meaning, and the rest didn't matter or even got in the way.

The time, place and circumstances of Jesus’ alleged miraculous conception and birth, recorded in such great detail in the gospels of Matthew and Luke, are never mentioned. Paul says not one word about Joseph, Jesus’ surrogate father who figures so prominently in the birth narratives. Also, Paul apparently never heard of John the Baptist who not only baptized Jesus, but who is said to have been instrumental in the fulfillment of certain Old Testament prophecies allegedly confirming Jesus as the long awaited messiah.

The story of the birth and subsequent events shows a knowledge of the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. Thus, this infancy gospel must have been written after the canonical gospels, late in the first century or perhaps as late as the mid-2nd century CE.
